Meet Assiatou
My name is Assiatou (she/her) and I am a labor support doula based in Chicago. I grew up hearing my mother’s birth stories and they were marked by trust in her body’s capability to birth. I was 16 when I learned that this was not the common experience of black women. When I began to learn of the ways that birthing is made dangerous, I wanted to be a person who made it less dangerous especially for black women. I hope to be a good witness, advocate, and support to people giving birth. My hope is that people who give birth are able to envision a beautiful birth for themselves, make informed choices during their pregnancy and labor, and receive the appropriate interventions.
